Getting Started

There are many ways in which you can promote the Berkshire Book Award, here are some suggestions...

  • Launch the Award in an assembly.
  • Dedicate a display board to books published in the last year and news of the Award and update it regularly.
  • Display eligible books in piles on tables as they do in books shops. Students are more likely to handle the books when displayed like this.
  • Encourage young people to search out new titles in TBK magazine and on the internet using review sites such as http://www.achuka.co.uk
  • Photocopy or download the “Berkshire Book Award” logo [33kb] and display on book jackets. Slip under the cover of paperbacks and cover with sticky back plastic on hardbacks.
  • Provide hard copy lists of the eligible books so that students can cross them off when they have read them. Leave space for them to add their own suggestions.
  • Give parents details of the short listed books so that they can buy them as Christmas presents.
  • Start a book group if there isn’t one already to discuss the short-listed books. (There is a wealth of information available on how to do this so don’t re-invent the wheel.) See http://www.literacytrust.org.uk
  • Draw up a league table of the most popular books.
  • Set up voting booths for final voting on the short list.  Students can vote for their favourite book during the week 21st-28th March.
  • Have a proper ballot box for nomination forms. Photocopier paper boxes are a good size and have separate lids, so the returned papers are easy to get to.
  • Make sure all who have participated have details on how to vote.
  • Have Head-to-Head mini debates between two readers, with each reader putting a case for their favourite book. Limit the time to 2 minutes so several debates could take place in one session.
  • Have a poster competition to promote the award.
  • Download stickers [.doc 604kb] (to be printed on on laser labels L7651) and use them as spine labels or give one to every reader who takes an eligible book.
  • Send reviews to the Award website.
  • Text reviews to friends and other groups.
  • Run a competition to see who can predict the outcome of the voting

Celebrate! – Have a party.
